Allotments

Our allotments located across the city are extremely popular and unfortunately there is currently a long waiting list at all sites, for more information please call 01722 342865

The city council’s allotments enable hundreds of residents to work their own piece of land and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Frequently asked questions:

How many allotments does the council have?

The city has over 650 plots across 12 different sites located around the city. For legal reasons the size of an allotment is quoted in rods, an old unit of measurement. Typical allotment sizes on our sites will be either 5 or 10 rods. A 5 rod plot is approximately equal to 126.5 square metres or 151.3 square yards.

How much does an allotment cost?

The current cost of an allotment is £4.70 per rod/per 25.3 square metres, per annum. Accordingly, the cost of a 5 rod plot is currently £23.50 for a year. Allotment bills are sent out automatically at the start of each year and payments can be made in a variety of ways. Included in this payment is the option for new tenants to have their plot rotovated.

What facilities do the allotments have?

Each site has its own water supply and a warden to assist tenants. Our sites also have security fencing and lockable gates to prevent unauthorised access. Tenants are provided with keys to access their site.

How do I get an allotment?

Anyone who lives in Salisbury can apply for an allotment (We regret we cannot consider applications from people who reside outside the city boundary at the present time) For residents who live outside the city, allotments are administered by the local parish or town council.

Are the allotments accessible to people with disabilities?

Special provision has been made for disabled gardeners at Fisherton Farm allotments. Please contact us for more details.

What can I grow on my allotment? Can I keep animals?

We are happy for you to grow whatever you want on your allotment within reason and within the law! We would also ask that you give consideration to your neighbouring tenants when deciding what to plant.

Tenants may also keep animals such as chickens. There are separate regulations relating to the keeping of animals on our sites and we would ask that you contact us should you be considering this option.

How do I enter the allotments competition?

There is an annual allotment competition that is open to all tenants. Entry forms for the competition are sent out to all tenants at the beginning of the year with the new agreements and invoice. All we ask is that you complete the tear off form and return it to us. We will then do the rest!

There are first, second and third prizes for each of the allotment sites, as well as an overall winner, an oldest citizen winner and a ladies’ cup.

Winners are announced at a presentation evening held at the Guildhall each September.

What is the Salisbury Allotment Association?

The Salisbury Allotment Association is an independent group, entirely autonomous from the city council, consisting of allotment tenants whose aims are to represent concerns and issues to the council. Membership currently costs £5 per annum which includes membership of the National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners, (NSALG).
